IP-Trek 2013 Iceland: 6 day trek with optional 2 or 3 day post-trek tours

6 Day Trek

Thursday July 04-Day 1. Arrival in Iceland, meet with your guide, transfer to Reykjavík domestic airport for the flight to Egilsstaðir, a town in the North East. Transfer to a comfortable hotel in one of the only real Icelandic forest. Your guide will go over the itinerary of the following days and you have a time to shake off the jet lag and get ready for the trekking ahead. Dinner buffet at the hotel.

Friday July 05-Day 2. A morning pick up and a transfer north to the pass of Vatnsskarð from where you start the first hike of the tour to the extraordinary Stórurð, a nature reserve of a mind blowing nature. After exploring the Stórurð you get back into the vehicle for a short transfer to the Borgarfjörður eystri and the quaint little village of Bakkagerði with a short sidetrip to the puffin colony of Höfn to get close to these strange birds before checking into a local guesthouse. Accommodations in dbl rooms with shared facilities, dinner at a local restaurant. Meals: BLD. Distance: 15 km, hiking time 5 – 7 hrs.

Saturday July 06-Day 3. Today´s trails will lead you through the various colorful small inlets south to Breiðavík inlet through the eastern hills. The trails start out as a jeep track but after the first pass you are following sheep trails through this fabulous landscaðe. Sleeping bag accommodations at the comfy hut of Breiðavík. Transport of luggage other than the necessary day packs. Meals: BLD. Distance 13 km, hiking time 5 – 7 hrs.

Sunday July 07-Day 4. Leaving the comfy hut you take the trail leading to the small inlet of Húsavík to the south of Breiðavík. The trail leads through the impressive and spectacular landscapes of the colorful hills before descending into the Húsavík valley where a comfortable hut awaits for the night.  Sleeping bag accommodations. Transport of luggage other than the necessary day packs. Meals: BLD. Distance 15 km, hiking time 5 – 7 hrs

Monday July 08-Day 5. From Húsavík hut you start out by climbing to the pass of Nesháls along the jeeptrack that climbs up in switchbacks. From the pass dramatic views can be enjoyed before descending down into the lowlands and the valley of Loðmundarfjörður. Passing through the Loðmundarskriður you enter the abandoned farmlands where yet another cozy hut awaits. Sleeping bag accommodations. Transport of luggage other than the necessary day packs. Meals: BLD. Distance: 13 km, hiking 4 - 6 hrs

Tuesday July 09-Day 6. From Loðmundarfjörður you climb the old trail up the Hjálmárdalsheiði pass taking you into the grand fjord Seyðisfjörður – completely different from the fjords and inlets you have been traversing. Seyðisfjörður is long and deep with dramatic mountains towering above the ocean. From Seyðisfjörður a bus will take you back to Egilsstaðir in time for the flight to Reykajvík. Transfer to a centrally located hotel for the night. Accommodations in dbl rooms with private facilities. Transport of luggage other than the necessary day packs. Meals: BLD. Distance: 14 km, hiking 4 - 6 hrs

Wednesday July 10-Day 7. Transfer to Keflavík airport for departure.


2 Day post-trek Tour - Reykjavík Golden Circle and great whales

Wednesday July 10-Day 7. A morning pick up for the daytour IMG08 an amazing day tour taking you to the Golden Circle, the World Heritage Site of Þingvellir NP, the renowned Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall as well as an incredible walk on a real glacier. Drop off at your hotel at the end of the tour.

Thursday July 11-Day 8. A morning pick up for a whale watching tour from Reykjavík Harbor. Free afternoon to explore Reykjavík.

Friday July 12-Day 9. Transfer to Keflavík airport for departure


3 Day Post-trek Climb - Mt.  Hvannadalshnúkur (2110m/6,920ft.)

Wednesday July 10-Day 7. A morning transfer to Vatnajökull NP – Skaftafell with the public bus. Arriving in Skaftafell you will find the IMG headquarters and can consult with the staff about the upcoming summit trek as they arrange your necessary glacier gear and go over the itinerary of the day ahead. Possible hike in the area of Skaftafell or a transfer to the nearby hotel Freysnes where you will stay the next 2 nights. Dinner at the hotel. Accommodations in dbl rooms.

Thursday July 11-Day 8. An Alpine start, pick up by the IMG staff at 04.30 for the transfer to the foot of Hvannadalshnúkur where the hike starts. You must prepare for a long day, even though the climb is not technical it is a long one and could take up to 14 hrs. Transfer to Hotel after the hike concludes. Breakfast and dinner at hotel as well as lunch bag for the day. Accommodations in dbl rooms.

Friday July 12-Day 9. Transfer to Reykjavík with the public bus and to a conveniently located hotel/guesthouse downtown

Saturday July 13-Day 10. Transfer to Keflavík airport for departure.
